Cockburnspath & Cove Community Garden and Allotments

Local residents are encouraged to take their garden waste to the allotments where it is processed into compost for use in the garden.

We shred woody stuff to make it more compostable. We have to be ultra careful not to feed our shredder with undigestible material (stones, glass, metal) as breakages can be expensive, so please ensure it’s organic material only.

Also, to protect the health of the composters (Neil, David and Jess), please use empty bags to spread the load if leaving heavy material.

Composting goes Hi-Tech at Cockburnspath and Cove allotments

Introducing: CYCLOSIEVE. In co-operation with our Community Council we have been running the ‘Green Waste Scheme’ at the allotments since the 2023 season and although we produce perfectly good unadulterated organic compost we felt that in comparison with commercially available compost it is a bit rough despite the use of a shredder for woody material.

The answer was either a much better shredder (price!) or a sieve.  For a solution we came up with an idea which was developed into the Cyclosieve, a ‘green’ solution to our problem which will sift our compost making a suitable medium for sowing fine seed.

Below, you will see our composting process with the inaugural outing of the Cyclosieve powered by a top local cyclist, Dave Philip.
